Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
TMJ disorder isn’t always obvious; while some of these issues can cause pain and discomfort, it’s also possible for a patient to experience very mild or seemingly non-existent symptoms. In any case, a few of the most common signs and symptoms tend to include things like:
- Jaw pain, tenderness, and/or stiffness
- Aching pain in or around your ear
- Difficulty or pain when chewing and swallowing
- Headaches, earaches, and facial pain
- Popping or clicking sounds from your jaw
- Tinnitus, or ringing in your ears
TMJ Treatment Options
We’ll have to closely examine your mouth and jaw to determine what’s causing your TMJ disorder but rest assured, once we’ve figured out the source of the problem, we can begin drawing up your treatment plan. It might involve one of a few different treatment options, depending on your needs.
BOTOX Treatment
If you’re familiar with BOTOX, you might already know that it’s often used to address aesthetic facial issues such as laugh lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles. But did you know that it can be used to address TMJ pain and related issues? Our very own Dr. Cobey is trained and certified to provide this quick, minimally invasive treatment option for qualifying patients.
Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments
This involves the very minor reshaping of the teeth to allow them to fit together seamlessly when the jaw joints are correctly situated. This ultimately reduces the stress on certain areas of your mouth, which often helps to relieve painful TMD symptoms and can even protect your teeth from further harm.
Occlusal Splints
These are sort of like mouthguards; they’re custom-made to fit over your teeth and they allow your jaws to close on an even surface. Since TMJ pain often originates from jaw misalignment, moving the jaws into proper alignment can greatly reduce pain and wear and tear on the teeth due to bruxism.
